May has been observed as Mental Health Month since 1949. In addition to the daily work we do to educate, prevent and treat mental health concerns, the month of May places emphasis in hopes that we can end the stigma of mental illness, which will help in people coming forward for treatment.
As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end, we salute Judge Steven Leifman for all of his work in decriminalizing mental illness. He created a diversion program in Florida for arrestees with mental illness. He has served as Special Advisor on Criminal Justice and Mental Health for the Supreme Court of Florida since 2007. He is known for his efforts to keep mentally ill individuals out of prisons and jails. Salute, Judge Leifman and THANK YOU!
